PRESS RELEASE: 21 October 200
UK waste management companies may find themselves unable to meet Government imposed targets for recycling, due to under-investment in technology, as up to 90% of companies are not using an integrated IT system. Most waste companies use different systems for different aspects of their business. Many use systems that have been developed in-house, or products from different suppliers that are loosely knitted together. As one of the most heavily regulated sectors of the UK economy, waste management companies need to invest in systems that will enable them to keep pace with a changing environment.
The Landfill Problem
The UK currently produces 28 million tonnes of municipal waste every year
- 83% of which ends up in landfill. Municipal waste includes all waste
under the control of local authorities or agents acting on their behalf,
and around 60% of the municipal waste stream is biodegradable. The production
of household waste is suggested to be increasing at a rate of 3% per year,
although much of this may be waste diverted from other sources (e.g. commercial
waste) rather than "new" household waste.
EU Legislation
The EU Landfill Directive sets targets for the reduction of biodegradable
waste sent to landfill as 75% of the 1995 level by 2010, 50% of the 1995
level by 2013 and 35% of the 1995 level by 2020. This means that by 2020
the UK only needs to divert 40 per cent of household waste from landfill
to meet the legal requirements of the Landfill Directive, as long as all
of this is biodegradable waste.
The Solution
Having a single, integrated system like dataflow~32 enables waste
businesses to eliminate the costly exercise of duplicating data across
their organisation. Dataflow's Waste Collection Disposal Management system
allows full control and monitoring of regular collections/deliveries.
Handling Wet & Dry Waste, Roll On/Roll Off, Skips, Dustcarts etc.,
schedules can be produced on a daily or weekly basis and the efficiency
of the collections monitored. Where special arrangements have to be made
for the collection of the goods (i.e. Duty of Care) the necessary paperwork
can be produced. On completion the collection details are automatically
transferred through to the accounting ledgers.
Dariush Mogtader, Dataflow's Managing Director, pointed out the benefits of having an integrated system for the waste management industry. "Significant efficiency gains are made from using a system like dataflow~32. Many processes that are currently taking up valuable time are automated. Any business working in a sector subject to changing legislative pressures needs to be flexible. Companies require access to accurate information and with dataflow~32 we are able to offer waste management businesses exactly this".
